How far is Naivasha from Nairobi?

Naivasha is approximately 90 kilometres from Nairobi's city centre, via the A104 Nairobi-Nakuru Highway. In normal traffic conditions — leaving Nairobi before 7:00 AM or after 9:00 AM on weekdays, or early on weekends — the drive takes 90 minutes to 2 hours.

Is Naivasha worth a day trip from Nairobi?

Absolutely yes. Naivasha consistently ranks as the most rewarding day trip from any major East African city. The combination of a boat safari among hippos and fish eagles, cycling through Hell's Gate National Park with wildlife, and walking among giraffes on Crescent Island — all within a single day — is simply not available anywhere else within two hours of an African capital city.

What is the best time of year to visit Naivasha for a day trip?

Naivasha is excellent year-round. The dry seasons from January to February and June to September offer the most reliable weather and clearest skies for photography. The long rains from March to May can make Hell's Gate cycling tracks muddy but the bird life is exceptional. Short rains in October and November are generally light. For birding, the rainy seasons attract migrant species making them the best time for species diversity.

Can I do Hell's Gate and a boat safari in one day from Nairobi?

Yes — comfortably, if you start early. Depart Nairobi by 6:00 AM, do the sunrise boat safari (back by 9:00 AM), then drive to Hell's Gate for cycling and the gorge walk (10:30 AM to 2:00 PM), with lunch in Naivasha and an optional Crescent Island walk in the afternoon. You will be back in Nairobi by 7:00 PM.

Is it safe to do a day trip to Naivasha from Nairobi?

Yes. Naivasha is one of the safest tourist destinations in Kenya with a well-established tourism infrastructure. The A104 highway is the main Nairobi-Nakuru road and is safe and well-used. Standard travel precautions apply: keep valuables secured, avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas, and use reputable operators for all activities. Crescent Shores Retreats provides door-to-door transfers for all day packages.

Do I need to book Naivasha activities in advance?

For weekend visits, book at least 48 hours in advance — particularly for boat safaris and Crescent Island walks which have limited daily capacity. Hell's Gate park entry does not require advance booking but is busiest at weekends. Crescent Shores manages all bookings and park entry for clients on our day packages. For weekday visits, same-day bookings are often possible — call ahead on +254 790 292 838 to confirm availability.
