The drive from Nairobi to Naivasha follows the A104 Nairobi–Nakuru Highway west. The road is sealed and generally well-maintained. From central Nairobi the journey is approximately 90 to 120 minutes depending on traffic — leave before 7 AM to avoid Nairobi’s morning congestion. The descent into the Rift Valley on the escarpment road is one of the most spectacular drives in Kenya.

Option 2 — Public Matatu

The park’s resident animals include Maasai giraffe, Burchell’s zebra, Cape buffalo, Thomson’s gazelle, eland, warthog, and — occasionally — leopard (you will not see the leopard, and the leopard will most definitely see you). The cycling track runs approximately 22 kilometres through the main valley. Most day-trippers cycle 8 to 12 kilometres, descend into the gorge at Ol Njorowa, walk through the slot canyon and past the natural hot springs, and return to the gate.

The gorge section is done on foot — you leave your bike at the gorge entrance. The walk through the towering red rock walls is around 2 to 3 kilometres and takes 1 to 1.5 hours depending on how long you spend at the geothermal hot springs at the far end.

Note: Hell’s Gate requires a basic level of fitness for cycling. Alternatives for those who prefer not to cycle include hiring a guided vehicle inside the park.

3. Crescent Island Guided Walk

Crescent Island is not technically an island — it is a long peninsula enclosing a private bay on the eastern side of Lake Naivasha. It has no predators.
